reaching housing goals

From new construction and renovation to energy audits and winterization, NHSH has helped expand year-round housing opportunities and make homes more efficient since 2006. NHSH has provided housing for 32 individuals, audited and weatherized nearly 50 homes, and helped to keep 12 families on island. Additionally, we have worked with Southern Harbor Eldercare Services to keep our elders on island and provide jobs for our community.

15 MULLINS LANE

In early 2022, North Haven Sustainable Housing recognized an important opportunity to acquire a home in the center of the downtown district. Ensuring that this home remains part of the year round housing stock is important to NHSH in an effort both to help maintain the vitality of downtown, as well as to secure this home to support the efforts of the North Haven Community School. NHSH is working with the North Haven Community School to provide housing for the Offshore Year magnet program, a program that hopes to bring students to North Haven for a unique one year experience to study and live in our island community. During the school year this home will provide housing for students in the Offshore Year program, as well as the Offshore Coordinator who has been hired to help develop and grow the program. In the summertime, the house will be occupied by employees of community organizations and businesses to provide housing for seasonal staff. In addition to general property improvements, NHSH is beginning to develop plans to expand the housing opportunities that this home can offer, including a renovation of the garage apartment into a separate housing unit.

Named after its previous owner, the "Dyer House" is a year-round duplex rental that was renovated from 2011-2012 to house two families. This three-story home was developed with significant support from a Maine State Housing Grant grant as well as the Genesis Community Loan Fund.

NHSH advertised the home, selected the qualified buyer and assisted the landowner in the sales process. The house now has an affordability covenant which seeks to ensure that the property will remain occupied by year-round residents who are qualified if re-sold in the future.

ENERGY AUDITS AND WEATHERIZATION WORK

North Haven Sustainable Housing has undertaken nearly fifty energy audits and weatherization upgrades to existing homes all over the island. By hiring independent contractors, NHSH has been able to subsidize bringing older structures up to par by conducting blower door tests and using infrared cameras to analyze and seal leaky basements, attics, seams and doors. NHSH has also subsidized major insulation projects for qualified individuals and families. If you are interested in an energy audit or other weatherization work, please contact us.
